ずばりそのものだと思います。

> # ldconfig -v | grep libz
>         libz.so.1 => libz.so.1.1.3

> と表示されるので libz は存在してると思います.

いちおう、

  libz.a
  libz.so	-> libz.so.1.1.3
  libz.so.1	-> libz.so.1.1.3
  libz.so.1.1.3

があるか確かめてみてください。なければ上記のようになるように適宜
シンボリックリンクを張ってください。
# 手元の環境では /usr/lib 以下に libz があります

この状態で一度

  # ldconfig

して見えてくればいいのですが...
