よくよく INSTALL を読んでみましたら，

How to install results:
    If you want to change the default installation directory, edit the
    appropriate (system dependent) files in the DEFAULTS directory
    (e.g. DEFAULTS/Defaults.sunos5).

とあったので，DEFAULTS/Defaults.linux の部分を，

#INS_BASE=      /opt/schily
INS_BASE=       /usr

と書き換えてから，
$ make
# checkinstall -S
これで /usr 以下に配置されました．:-)
まだ焼いたりはしてませんが，ちゃんと動きそう．
