vmware上のPlamoで試してみました。
runlevel 3 で startx コマンドを使っているので下記を参考にしました。

startxでxfceも普通に起動しますが、
システムをリブートさせる際、下記メッセージが表示されます。

You should not be reading this error message.
It meansthat an unforeseen error took place in /etc/rc.d/rc6.d/K02cgroupfs-mount,
which exited with a return value of 32.
If you're able to track this error down to a bug in one of the files provided by the plamo book,
please be so kind to inform us at plamo@xxxxxxxxxxxx

この後、Enter押下で無事リブートできます。
なので、困るわけではなく、私の環境依存の可能性もあるので、
何とも言えないのですが、一応、情報として報告しておきます。
