わたしも Plamo 2.1 で自分でコンパイルして同じメッセージに
遭遇しました。

make xconfig　を実行し、 Network support の項目で
Socket support (Packet supportだっかかも？)にチェックを入れて
カーネルを再構築したら動作した覚えがあります
うろおぼえですみませんが、お役にたてば幸いです。

>  ethereal を root になって起動し、Capture → Start で Interface に
> eth0 をいれ(ifconfig -a で確認) OK を押すと以下のようなErrorを
